Training and Climate and Classes Oh My

SUMMARY: Some notes.
Sunday morning, temperatures were near freezing when I woke up.

Today, midday, I stepped outside--stripped off my usual fleece sweater and opened the sliding door into my office to let the outside air could warm up the inside. Tomorrow it's supposed to be near record-setting highs for this date (low 80s F -- 26+ C).

It was a beautiful out there! Too bad I worked for 12 hours. Still, I took the dogs out to the yard in the very late afternoon. And, just like that, for the first time in months I really felt like doing some agility training. Could I simply have been feeling the cold and the gloom, affecting my interest in working on agility?

I set up weaves in the middle of my lawn--which for some inexplicable reason is lusher and happier than it has been in years, all the bare spots filled in, which NEVER happens; in fact, winter often makes it worse when the dogs are running around on sodden soil and tearing up the grass-- anyway, it's beautiful out there!

We practiced some weave entries at angles out of full-blast tunnels. Everyone needs practice, tsk tsk tsk!

BUT alas and alack! No class last week due to rain. Class this week, but then no class the following two weeks! We are SO not getting our practice in! And we've got the huge annual 4-day USDAA trial coming up in...

gulp!

...7 days from now I'll have already completed the first day of that trial. I'm not doing all 4 days this year, though; reverting to only thursday through saturday so I don't completely melt into a pathetic pool of exhaustion and ichor.

The last time that I did only 3 days, BOTH dogs qualified for the money round in Steeplechase, but that's always on Sunday, and I didn't stay. Ah, well, will face the same thing this year.

Dogs should enjoy themselves immensely, if it doesn't rain again. (Agility trial a week or two ago at that site had to be cancelled because of extreme rain and wind. And rain rain rain followed by mud may have been what done in my knee a few years back.)

Let's keep hoping for beeeeyutiful spring weather! And maybe this weekend I'll still feel like practicing!

Titles Titles Titles

SUMMARY: Just one Q could clean up our lists a lot!
OK, so using my own notation for performance titles for Tika, our current USDAA title list looks like this:

  •  LAA-Silver, ADCH-Silver, PDCH, TCh-Platinum,
    PSCH, PGCH/PJCH/PRCH/PSCH/PTM-Bronze;

If we could get just one more Standard Q, it would look like this:

  •  LAA-Silver, ADCH-Silver, PDCH-Bronze, TCh-Platinum

Ahhh, so clean and neat! Well, 2 weeks to our next two chances for that one Q.

And Boost's CPE titles look like this:

  • CL3,CL4-R/F/S

All she needs is one Colors Q to flip over to this:

  •  CL4

Haven't yet decided when our next CPE will be. Have done only one the last couple of years, but tsk! how untidy to leave that one Colors Q dangling, since we filled in our other missing pieces last weekend.

I love flipping up to a whole new level! Yeah, OK, I'm a title addict.

New USDAA Performance Titles

SUMMARY: Adjusting titles to be more like Championship titles.
You'd think that the easiest thing to do to make the Performance titles more like Championship titles would be to just add P. As in--
AD - P-AD (or PAD)
AAD - PAAD
MAD - PMAD
SM - PSM
JCH - PJCH

But no, they have to get fancy.

Hence
AD - PD
AAD - APD (oops, APD USED to mean P-ADCH; now *that's* confusing!)
MAD - MPD
SM - PKM (yeah, that's obvious--)
JCH - PJCH (now, see, isn't this one easy?)

So it's not even self-consistent: Sometimes the P is in the middle, sometimes it's not.

But at least the Championship title (which used to be "APD" so everyone said, "Performance Championship") now looks like a CH: PDCH. Three cheers for that!

But I still think I'll have to continue saying, "P-AAD," "P-MAD," and so on. SO much easier than constantly saying "performance equivalent to ...", which is what I say every time someone asks or when we send out announcements about new titles.

Link to download PDF comparing old and new Performance titles, and also Championship vs Performance titles (which they wouldn't even need if they had done it logically! but ok I'll be quiet now): https://www.usdaa.com/article.cfm?newsID=1732

Videos Videos Videos!

SUMMARY: I splurged this weekend.
I have such a hard time remembering to find someone to videotape my runs, and just doing so is a pain when everyone's busy and I'm busy and I'm just wanting to concentrate on getting my dogs engaged & warmed up & ready to run.

This weekend I splurged on videos from 4 Legged Flix--they're one of a couple of vendors who have the video set-up to look down on the course and they really automate the process of selling the vids. I didn't buy all of them; just ones of particular interest.

So here are as many videos as you'd like to watch! (If there are any course maps you'd particularly like to see, ask and I can scan them in.)

My biggest observation: I always feel like I'm hustling out there, but in the vids, I look like I'm lumbering and barely picking up my feet. Someday I'll learn how to really run.

Tika Sunday Jumpers

Tika's Jumpers run is nice and fast. I over-called her before the blue tunnel, causing a slow-down and bobble, and one wide turn before the last tunnel, so her time ended up being only 3rd fastest of the 88 dogs who ran the course. But she works so hard to do the right thing! And I love the little clouds of dust she kicks up as she runs.

Boost Sunday Full House

I love Full House with my dogs! Plot my own course and see how many points we can rack up in 30 seconds. Boost gets 47 points here, highest of all 122 dogs; next closest was 42, then my Tika with 40 (my error on her course).

Tika Sunday Standard

Tika just has a really nice Standard run. Except--one *#%@ bar, which is all that kept us from a perfect weekend (Qing in all classes). Not sure why that bar came down, either; I don't think I was saying anything, and it wasn't that sharp a turn. Fastest time of any of the 66 4/5/C dogs at 34.46 secs; only 3 others were even under 40 seconds. Notice her "modified running contacts". (AKA relaxed criteria that sometimes works out ok.)

This doesn't look like a 10-year old dog with occasional arthritis!

Boost Sunday Standard

Same course as Tika's run.

Boost doesn't take the jump in front of her on my lead-out pivot, instead cuts across and slams through the next jump. I did take my eyes off her and probably turned my shoulders too soon. Then she pops out of the weaves at #10, another ongoing problem. But she handled my rear cross on the weaves without a second thought, and does the correct tunnel under the dogwalk, a challenge that many, many dogs and handlers missed.

Tika Saturday Jackpot (Gamblers)

The world's longest 30-second Gamblers opening. We were supposed to have 30 seconds before the buzzer. We ran out of obstacles and then I asked the judge where the buzzer was; he said it wasn't at 30 seconds yet, then it finally went off. (Time it as you watch it, starting as Tika passes the large orange cone--it's about 50 seconds.) It was a manual start, so I think the timer just didn't get started until we'd been out there for almost 20 seconds already. Not surprisingly, we had many more points than anyone else who ran this class, even though I obviously wasn't always communicating perfectly with my dog.

Boost Saturday Jackpot (Gamblers)

I meant the first obstacle to be the Aframe for both dogs, but both dogs go into the tunnel instead. Obviously handler error. Thought I gave more room after muffing it with Tika, but Boost did the same thing. Ah well.

Boost exhibits one of her issues--pushing off a tunnel entrance when I'm trying to rear cross. Skims through two sets of weaves instead of doing them correctly. Knocks the first bar in the gamble (maybe because I yell "climb" right as she's going over it, but still--), then doesn't even look for the final jump after coming out of the tunnel. Ah, well. But she had 2nd highest opening points even without the weaves of all 4/5/C dogs who ran this course. (Tika had more due to that timer error.)

Boost Saturday Standard

Boost having a pretty nice Standard run. 2nd fastest of all 65 level 4/5/C dogs; I made sure to hold her on her contacts. I'm noticing that she's really slowing down going over the Aframe and at the end of the dogwalk. Hmm. Also, the three jumps side-by-each after the first set of weaves, I don't know how we managed to get through that. I didn't get the front cross in that I wanted before the first jump so tried to rear cross it and my timing was apparently awful based on her behavior--I have no idea how she didn't knock that bar!

Boost Saturday Colors

Boost at her best--I'm ahead of her so she doesn't have to check in with me; she holds her contact until released. Fastest of all 59 dogs who ran this 9-obstacle course (yeah I don't really get the point, either), a blazing 13.71 seconds. She's really stretching out to run.

Tika Saturday Colors

Same course with Tika; Tika had the 2nd-fastest time of all 59 dogs who ran this course. Notice that she does NOT stop on the Aframe down contact, whereas boost does and waits for my release--Tika is still .4 seconds slower than Boost.

CPE Detailed Results

SUMMARY: Another ALMOST perfect weekend plus lots of blue and a few flaws in my evil plans.
My evil plan for the weekend: A triple-perfect weekend for both dogs, which means:
  • Part 1: All first places in our class (dogs at same level and height)
  • Part 2: Perfect Weekend: Qs in all 8 classes (you get a ribbon and special recognition for that)
  • Part 3: All fastest/highest scores of all dogs who ran the same course (which  is all level 4/5/C dogs, sometimes also all level 3 dogs, and, sometimes, all dogs, period)

However, as with all evil plans, there were flaws in the planning stages--

Tika's Weekend

Tika competed in Level C all weekend. Level C is the only level in CPE in which you cannot Q with faults. You must both qualify to be in Level C and choose to compete at that level. You can also opt to compete at Level 5, where certain faults will still allow you to Q. For example--knocking one bar in Standard.

Q?placedogs in classall dogstime/scorehighest, fastest, strongest, cutest...
Sat. Colors Q 1 7 59 14.17 sec 2nd fastest all (Boost faster)*
Sat. Wildcard Q 1 10 92 18.51 sec 2nd fastest all (Boost faster)
Sat. Standard Q 1 6 64 36.22 sec 4th fastest all (boost faster, also 2 others)
Sat. Gamblers# Q 1 7 67 43+20 pts highest opening pts, highest total all dogs (AND knocked bar on 5-ptr**** so 0 for that)
Sun Standard nq 4 6 66 34.46 sec, bar** fastest all dogs (only 3 others even under 40 secs)
Sun. Full House Q 2*** 10 122 40 pts 4th highest of all dogs (Boost and 2 dogs with 42 pts--if only I hadn't run tika past that 5-pt aframe instead of going up it)
Sun. Jumpers Q 1 8 88 25.11 sec fastest all level 4/5/C dogs--but dang, two small level 3 dogs were faster!
Sun. Snooker Q 1 7 77 51 pts, 32.44 secs. tied with Boost for highest (Boost faster)
* Flaw A in my evil plan: When Boost and I run well together, we'll beat Tika. So, doh, not only can both dogs not get the highest score or the fastest time, but it's extremely unlikely that one will beat the other in all 8 classes. Plan Part 3 defeated!
** Flaw B: Tika--knocked a bar at 20"?! Crap! In level C, that ruined our perfect weekend. Especially frustrating when 47 out of 66 dogs NQed on this course and Tika was the only one who NQed because of a stupid bar--others were off-courses or major faults. Gah. And, of course, had I opted to enter her in Level 5, it would've been a Q. In fact--this one stupid bar is the only thing that stood between us and our Perfect Weekend ribbon. Plan Part 2 defeated!
***Flaw C: Gak! Boost and Tika BOTH entered in Level C 20"! That means they were competing directly and both could NOT take 1st place! Gak! Plan Part 1 defeated!
****I think we had a timer issue in our favor on this one. Sure, Tika was fast and pretty accurate. Sure, I had a good plan. But Tika did a 49-point opening, when no other dog got more than 37--18 obstacles, which is a lot for 30 seconds-- AND I ran out of my plan and extra obstacles, AND I had time to stop and look at the judge and say, where's my buzzer, AND he had time to step over to the timer and look and say that we had time left. About then, the buzzer blew. I'm thinkin' that the manual start didn't start and we must've gotten quite a bit more than 30 seconds. That's OK, makes Tika look like super-dog. On the other hand--Boost did two sets of weaves incorrectly and then bounced back to me, so didn't get points for those, looked back at me instead of going straight on to jumps and tunnels, thereby wasting time...but, still--guess I'll have to wait for the video to arrive to know The Truth.
#Sorry, "Jackpot" it's called in CPE. It's still Gamblers.

That one red ribbon! Tsk! Dang that Boost!

Boost's Weekend

Boost competed in Level 4 in some classes, Level 5 in some, and Level C in Full House.
Q?placedogs in classall dogstime/scorehighest, fastest, strongest, cutest...
Sat. Colors Q 1 5 59 13.71 fastest all dogs
Sat. Wildcard Q 1 7 92 17.11 fastest all dogs*
Sat. Standard Q 1 8 64 34.92 2nd fastest all dogs (Teo the Toller 2 secs faster!**)
Sat. Gamblers nq 4 6 67 37 op. pts, 0 closing tied 2nd highest opening with 2 other dogs (Tika highest)
Sun Standard nq 3 8 66 a bit of a mess ran past a jump for an off course. Popped out of weaves at #10. Some bobbling. Some very nice bits, too.
Sun. Full House Q 1 10 122 47 points highest all dogs--next closest were two with 42 and Tika with 40***. TOO! MUCH! FUN!
Sun. Jumpers nq 2 5 88 another mess ran past a couple of jumps, once for an offcourse, and some "what this jump?"
Sun. Snooker Q 1 4 77 51 pts****, 29.10 secs tied Tika for highest pts; faster
*These first two are very short courses--9 to 12 obstacles. What a blast, running her on these short, simple courses!
**I was holding Boost on all her contacts and telling her she was a good girl. I'm sure that used up at least 2 seconds. ;-)
***Only reason Tika wasn't 2nd highest (or tied with Boost) was because I misjudged where I had to be to push Tika out to the Aframe, so she ran past it instead of getting the 5 points and we wasted a bit of time getting back on track. Tika ran first, so I learned from that and did not make the same mistake with Boost. Voila.
****Snooker. What a simple little course, with all the reds surrounding the 7-point obstacle, which was a set of 6 weaves, and a closing that was a tight little circle. There's a sign of the big difference between CPE and USDAA--only a couple of the 77 dogs who ran that course even tried for three 7s in the opening, and we were the only ones who succeeded. Jeez, we had 40 seconds! Even with me missing one important front cross with both dogs, which caused a little confusion, and not wrapping my dogs clearly enough around another jump, both did the whole thing in about 30 seconds.

That one red non-Qing ribbon--everyone else had so much trouble with that Jumpers run that Boost still came in 2nd even with an NQ. I felt we earned it.

Overall

I'm still figuring out my new point-and-shoot. Got a lot more photos than I'd have gotten with the old one, but a lot more are blurrier than I was expecting. Including the two above, where hte dogs were holding still, I was holding still, I was controlling the environment--and still they're soft. Guess I should learn my tools better.

Boost had a pretty good weekend mostly. Never broke her start line (but we also worked on that before every run). Left only a couple of contacts early, in full house as it became clear that I was releasing her quickly, and then not much early. Weaves were still an issue. Popped out of one 12-pole weave, skipped randomly through the poles on two 6-pole weaves. That's 3 out of 13 weaves for the weekend. Not great.

Several of the courses allowed me to stay ahead of her or to be exactly where I wanted to be so I didn't have to "trust" her to do the right thing, so she flowed smoothly and ran fast. I think CPE courses allow this for me more than USDAA courses do. When she got ahead of me or when I expected her to do the right thing but wasn't close enough to monitor it, then things fell apart as usual.

Boost knocked only two bars that I remember all weekend, and of course it was one that counted--the first one in the Gamble, which negated the entire gamble. The other was a botched lead-out pivot where she crashed the entire jump.

Tika also held the start line all weekend. I was exceptionally firm with both dogs on every run at the start line. The only time Tika got up and started to move before I was ready, the timer called me back after releasing me, so saved by the bell!

Tika actually knocked two bars--the perfect-weekend stealer in Standard, and the one bar in Gamblers that cost us a 5-pointer.

Final note: Wow I love Full House with my dogs! You pretty much design your own course with minimal rules, and then do as many obstacles as you can in 30 seconds. What a blast to challenge myself with a high-scoring course design that my dogs and I can actually do, and then to move them and myself through that course at our peak performance. Woo hoo! Wouldn't it be fun to have an ENTIRE WEEKEND of nothing but Full House? Hmmm--perhaps it's Evil Plan time again--

Cold, Wet, Fun Weekend

SUMMARY: I do like CPE and hanging out with my friends. Rain and cold, not so much.

My evil plan for the weekend was to earn first places in everything with both dogs and to have the fastest and/or highest-scoring points of everyone who ran the same course regardless of height or level.

After three of the four Saturday classes, things were looking pretty good on all counts.*
* Colors: Out of 59 dogs on the same course, Boost's time of 13.71 was the fastest, Tika's 14.17 was 2nd fastest; one dog came close at 14.66 but the next closest was 15.83 and most were 19 seconds or slower.

Wildcard: Out of 64 dogs on the same course, boost's 17.11 was fastest, Tika's 18.51 was 2nd fastest, and the next closest was 19.28.

Standard: out of 64 dogs on the same course, Boost's 34.92 was second fastest (I held her on the contacts to be sure she got them), with the faster dog at 32.65. Tika was 4th fastest at 36.22 with the intervening dog at 36.01.

Didn't end up quite as perfect, but I'll talk about that tomorrow.

The weather had called for rain showers on Saturday. This is what it looked like--All. Day. Saturday.

(Funny note: At the Motel 6, we had to fill out the usual registration form asking for our car's license. I put MUTT MVR. The clerk looked at it and said, "Could you please put your license number? It's important that we have that information in case we need to contact you about your vehicle."

"That is my license," said I. "I mean," he said, "the number on your car's license plate." "That IS my license plate," I said. "It's a personalized plate." He looked at it and looked at it. "I've never seen a license like that before." Interesting--do people who can afford personalized plates stay somewhere other than at Motel 6? But, as usual, I digress--)

If there were separate rain showers, each pretty much began as the last one faded. Dreary. Discouraging. This Human Mom was not interested in tossing the frisbee for the poor Merle Girls in the swampy grass field; not even thrilled about taking them out of the [fortunately] covered arena for potty times.

And it was cold, too. Thank goodness for fingerless lined gloves to enable my score-tabling activities.

And the calf-length down-filled grotesquely purple coat.

But O.M.G. this huge container of the best home-made toffee in the universe ruined my other usual evil plan to lose 5 lbs over the weekend. (Thanks, Gwen! (Take that both ways.))

The rain did break gradually on Sunday, so when the competition had completed and we were packed and ready to go home, out we went into the now-sunny swamp.

It's 5 hours later and both dogs are still damp and encaked with mud (despite my best attempts to hose them down at the site). Gah. But they seemed to have fun, and that's what the weekend was all about. (And Tika showed no signs of soreness or age! Yowza!)

I had fun, too, hanging out with friends, joking, enjoying people's successes (yes, including my own), running my dogs full out with their enthusiasm overflowing. Enjoyed myself enough so that I'm thinking [perhaps in a deranged, sleep-deprived, toffee-overdosed haze] about once again chairing a CPE trial so that we can once again have one that is more local. Will have to decide in the next couple of days about that. It might be just one too many evil plans for my own good.

CPE Coming Right Up, Plus Silly Lyrics

SUMMARY: The best of K-TMH radio, and what about this weekend?
OK, get that bouncy Eurythmics music going in your head and now sing along!

Dog dreams are made of fleece
Who am I to disagree?
I travel to parks and agility
Every doggie's playing with something
Some of them tug their tug toys
Some of them want to play tug with you
Some of them gnaw on their chew toys
Some of them want to gnaw on you--

Hold that toy up! (movin' on...)
Shake that toy up! (movin' on...)

SOOOO now we'll be off for a weekend of CPE agility. We don't do it much any more. Tika will never earn her C-ATE, I'm afraid, with only one show a year. Boost will never get her C-ATCH. Would be nice to have one championship under her--uh--belt?

But.

Mostly I'm hoping for this weekend to have fun, run some great, fast courses, get some highest/fastest scores of all dogs for the weekend, maybe some blue ribbons.

It's going to be cold and wet, but at least this is a covered arena.

Hope you all have a lovely weekend doing whatever you're going to do.

Sendai Tsunami/Earthquake More Info

SUMMARY: Who belongs to the agility field, how to contribute, more stunning data, photos, and videos.
Since my last update, I've received so much more info. More than one could possibly absorb or even want to.

Where to contribute

Originally the folks in Colorado set up a fund to replace the agility equipment for the folks whose site was shown in that previous photo, although it's now so clear that the needs are more important, current, and urgent. Tom Kula (USDAA judge & competitor & USDAA's representative for the Japanese agility community) is in touch with the director of agility in Japan.

Donate here.

From Tom Kula:

>>> Tom 3/14/2011 8:41 AM >>>
I am in touch with the agility community in Japan. An effort is underway to
help to raise money and donate to those in need as they rebuild their lives.
Donations made to the link [above] will be transferred to the Director of Agility
for OPDES in Japan to distribute to those most hardest hit by this disaster.
Their needs are desperate (food, clothing, shelter).

I will keep everyone appraised of these efforts and any details I receive from
Japan. Most of you have seen the horrific photos which included a residential
area with a set of agility equipment in the foreground as the approaching wave
of water overtook the homes. The owner of that house is alive. It is these
individuals that desperately need our help.

Please help our agility friends in Japan by a donation and keep them in your
thoughts and prayers.

You may contact me privately with any particular concerns. Thanks again on
behalf of the Japanese Agility community for your help.

Who belongs to the agility field

This from our amazing Bay Team researcher, Holly Newman:

After two days of trying, I finally isolated the location of the Japanese agility field on Google Maps. Once I got the name of the field (Team Free Ride), I Googled for the website and clicked on the "Translate this page" link. The translation is horrific (and would actually be funny under better circumstances), but it was good enough to navigate me to directions and a map. Then all I had to do was orient myself to the Sendai airport and start scanning the roof colors and shapes.

Go to "38.13435,140.933754" on Google Maps and zoom in. You'll see both the red-roofed house and its slate-roofed neighbor. It appears to be an old satellite image so there's no agility field yet. There's even a street view that shows the house from the street.

The original photo of the field looks like it is taken from the Sendai airport, which is across the river/freeway to the west. The water is coming from the ocean to the east, not the river. When you look at the satellite photo, it becomes frightfully apparent just how much has already been wiped out by the time the photo is taken.

Also, if you go here and look at the top photo (with the before/after scroll bar), the agility house is just barely out of the frame at the bottom to the right of the river.

We have learned that the owner and dogs are fine. Here is the message that has been received from them (website is http://team-freeride.com/):
=================
It cannot speak English.
I'm sorry.
It is our field.

The field is annihilation.
The member is safe.
Everyone works hard.

Thank you.

Photos and videos

I don't recommend going here if you're already depressed. But the pictures and videos are awesome, in the traditional sense that they inspire awe and fear for the power of Nature.

Before/after photos--drag the slider on the various city photos to compare.

The following video of cars and boats--and trucks--and towards the end, entire buildings-- being swept away is numbing. There's a quick glimpse of onlookers' stunned faces. (A facebook user who lives in Japan noted: "This is news footage from Miyakoshi (http://bit.ly/hH4b97), 110 miles/180 km North of Sendai. Miyakoshi is a town right on the coast where a river meets the ocean. There are dykes on either side of the river, which is what the tsunami is pouring over in this video. You can really understand why tsunamis are colored black in traditional Japanese art!")

Scale of the quakes

The Sendai earthquake moved the eastern part of Japan 13 feet closer to the US (so Japan is now 13 feet wider) and dropped a 250-mile-long coastal section of Japan in altitude by two feet, which allowed the tsunami to travel farther and faster onto land. More info.

Quake after quake after quake

The USGS has a page that shows all quakes worldwide greater than 5.0 in the last 7 days. (For those who don't know, 5.0 is a notable, but probably not dangerous, quake, except to poorly structured buildings (not common in California or Japan). Can knock things over in your house. Can definitely wake you up if you're asleep. 6.0--getting into damage territory. Here's a list of Richter magnitude descriptions.)

Even today at that list, you can see that they're still being slammed by aftershocks over and over again. Here's the USGS map for that area--so many >5.0 quakes in the last 5 days that they just bury each other.

I captured the list for the day before and the 6 days after the 9.0 quake. Gut-wrenching.

Magnitude 5 and greater earthquakes located by the USGS and contributing networks in the last week (168 hours). Magnitudes 6 and above are in red.

The most recent earthquakes are at the top of the list. Times are in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC).

Click on the word "map" to see a ten-degree tall map displaying the earthquake. (Older quakes may be obscured by more recent quakes.) Click on an event's "DATE" to get a detailed report.
